We have a secure thirty bed state certified dementia unit at VVH that is dedicated to dementia with programs that include “the Club”, the “Living Room”, and “Namaste” for those with dementia. Residents on this unit also have the ability to be outside in a large secure area complete with gazobo's, raised flower beds, cement walking paths and benches.
The VVH dementia special care community is called “Freedom Village” and is grounded in best practice dementia care. The Freedom Village philosophy of care addresses both individual residents and the dementia community. The primary goal is the achievement of the highest possible quality of life for our residents.
Individual care starts with the development of the resident’s life story and a team assessment of each resident’s individual needs, values, preferences, and abilities. Recognition of the remaining abilities of individuals with dementia contributes significantly to successful treatment.
Care in Freedom Village is a partnership between staff and residents and their families. Beginning with the resident’s life story on admission and continuing with involvement in care planning, staff expects and welcomes the involvement of residents and their families in all aspects of life in the Village. An ongoing family support group supports this relationship.
The Hindu religion defines “namaste” as “honoring the spirit within.” The Namaste Life Room is available to those residents with advanced dementia. Flexible scheduling, a focus on comfort, dignity, and pain management, natural aromas, soft music, silent scenic videos, and massage, all contribute to daily living and compassionate care of residents.
